Hi, I'm Alexa!
I make illustrations to entertain and tell stories. I am particularly interested in whimsical and fun animal characters. For as long as I can remember I have loved animals. In elementary school I wanted to be a veterinarian. I remember lining up my many stuffed animals and bandaging them up. I’ve always lived with animals in my home, usually dogs as well as a few fish and most recently a kitten. I have a deep empathy and connection with animals, which has carried into my art.
I’ve always loved children’s books and enjoy the idea of art telling stories that are fun for kids. I appreciate children’s imagination and capacity to love and learn. I want to be able to illustrate stories that they can laugh at, learn from, and want to spend time with. I enjoyed picture books as a kid, and arguably love them even more now. Some of my illustrator influences include Dan Santat, whose work first inspired me to become an illustrator, Vera Brosgol, and Ryan T Higgins. I first came across Dan Santat when I saw his book "The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend" at a school book fair. I absolutely fell in love with his book, both the story and the illustrations blew me away. It was the first time I’d thought to myself, “I could be a children’s book illustrator”, and that’s what I’ve been pursuing ever since.
I use recognizable imagery in my art with a child audience in mind. My target audience is children and their reading companions. I want the experiences with my illustrations to be positive and enjoyable for all those involved.
